Top Tips for College Supplemental Essays

by | Nov 6, 2020 | College Writing

Last week, I talked about the best 6 ways to prep your high school senior for writing College Supplemental Essays:

  1. Do your research (don’t limit it to the major you think you want)
  2. Express “some interest” in a major versus choosing undecided
  3. Delve into how a college program matches your interests
  4. Demonstrate you GET the school’s “culture”
  5. Show that you value what makes this school unique
  6. When something genuinely excites you, get writing!

Today, I’m happy to share 6 pitfalls to avoid when writing those Supplemental Essay:

  1. Be different— not cliche or trite. Admissions reads thousands of essays
  2. “I’m excited to be on an urban campus”— does this represent your authentic self?
  3. Avoid repetition— if you already said it elsewhere in your app, don’t repeat
  4. Know the school— do not write about city life in a Middlebury College application
  5. Avoid picking a topic that’s too big— one life experience at a time
  6. If anywhere on that application you see the word “optional”— do not take that hall pass!

For Moms who don’t need Write Coach to “take this off my plate,” as one mother exclaimed, I offer you some free advice. The 6 most important things to ask of your student:

  1. Say something they have never heard
  2. Demonstrate your potential
  3. Use your unique voice
  4. Incorporate your sense of humor
  5. Show, don’t tell by being descriptive
  6. Be vulnerable, without TMI

Keep in mind, these critical college essays are sometimes considered optional, but are truly only optional if you don’t want to get into that particular college. I can help your student with selecting the right prompt that will convey their potential and how they best fit into the college of their choice. The coach is in!

About Me

I grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, lucky enough to have teachers who were witty, engaging, and knowledgeable. I had a love for sports, reading and creative writing. My 9th grade English teacher saw my passion for literature and stoked it. In my report card that spring she described me as a future author who was “ebullient” in my writing as well as in my day-to-day life. That is when I realized it just takes one moment, one word, one good grade, one laugh from an audience hearing your story to turn any of us into happy writers.

I earned my Masters in teaching English at Lesley University not long after graduating as an English major at Middlebury College. Naturally, I became an English teacher and author and eventually shared my love of reading and writing with my own children. It was only a matter of time that I’d find my dream job. Write Coach has lent me the platform to help cultivate writers to become more effective and confident communicators.

When not coaching writers, Ellen is also a published author.
